Board of Directors
Ward Brehm
Member of the Board
In May 2004, President Bush appointed Brehm Chairman of the Board of The United States African Development Foundation which was confirmed by the U.S Senate.
Established by Congress in 1980, USADF acts as an "Angel Investor" for African entrepreneurs while always keeping a sharp focus on the main mission: helping the poor in Africa to not be poor anymore through job creation and helping facilitate a growing middle class. Brehm has promoted a bold new vision for USADF, including significant direct trade and investment opportunities with international companies including Target Corp, General Mills and Cargill.
Brehm has represented the United States as a delegate to two African Growth and Opportunity Act forums (AGOA), and also traveled with two Presidential Delegations to Benin and Congo for Presidential inaugural ceremonies.
Brehm has an uncommon gift for building nonpartisan relationships and has served as a bridge between leaders of opposing views. He was helping facilitate the first annual National Prayer Breakfasts in Rwanda and Burundi and Congo and his combination of practical experience working among the world's "poorest of the poor" in Africa combined with these friendships within the highest circles of African government leaders has given him a refreshing perspective of the continent.
Brehm has traveled to East Africa over 30 times since his first trip in 1993. Since then he has brought numerous teams of American businessmen and members of Congress to experience both the poignant lessons as well as the great needs of Africa.
Brehm has authored two books relating his experiences in Africa: Life Through a Different Lens (Kirk House Publishers 1994) and most recently White Man Walking (Kirk House Publishers 2003.
In his "civilian life", Ward Brehm is the founder and Chairman of The Brehm Group, Inc. and Capstone Advisors Inc, two national consulting firms based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He has been married to his wife, Kris, for 27 years and they have three children Andy, Michael and Sarah. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
