SHEF Opens 12 New CFWshops
New franchisees bolstered by improved training session
April 2003

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — SHEF has opened 12 new CFWshops, 4 of which are clinics run by registered nurses -- the first in the franchise network. The addition of these shops brings the total number of CFWshops to 37.

The new nurse-owned clinics carry a wider range of drugs and offer an enhanced range of services that are not available at those CFWshops run by Community Health Workers. In addition to providing a higher level of care for childhood illnesses, nurse-owned clinics also provide treatments for sexually transmitted illnesses, offer more options for reproductive health services, and provide treatment of opportunistic infections in AIDS patients. Nurses in the franchise system will also support Community Health Workers in community health education programs such as de-worming exercises for school children, counseling services and preventive care, including AIDS education and nutrition advice.

After receiving valuable technical assistance from Management Sciences for Health (MSH) to improve the training program, SHEF ran the first field test of an improved four week training program with the new franchisees in February and March 2003. The new improved training program included week-long modules on business franchise management, drug management, client management and community support. A great deal of interactive sessions, case studies and role-playing enhanced the participant experience.

The training was delivered by MSH and SHEF training staff, and was preceded by a 'Training of Trainers" session conducted by MSH to equip the SHEF team to run such courses in the future.

About SHEF
Based in Minneapolis Minnesota, the Sustainable Healthcare Enterprise Foundation (SHEF) is improving access to basic health services and essential medicine, for children and their families in the developing world. SHEF accomplishes this by perfecting the franchise operating system of its CFWshops, and making the system available to other organizations and businesses throughout the developing world. The CFWshops are all located in Kenya Africa and a rapid expansion plan is underway to increase the number of shops throughout the country. SHEF is also launching a Medical Franchise Training Institute where organizations from around the world can learn how to adapt the CFWshops system to the needs of the communities where they operate.
